The Debt that ALL men pay...

He has made everything beautiful in His time: also He has set the world (or eternity) in their hearts, so that no one can find out the work that God makes from beginning to end.  Ecclesiastes 3:11

There is something that we all have to face and that is DEATH.  Well, my question to you is: How do you perceive life and death? Are you fearful?  Do you believe in a heaven or a hell?

I know many people have pets and I have even been told that these pets "know things", but do they really have knowledge?  A bee can build a six-sided cell in the honeycomb. Beavers can build dams. Spiders can build webs. But the spider cannot build a six-sided cell, and the bee cannot build a beaver’s dam.  They have instincts; they don’t have knowledge. They don’t have logic.

A man may not have instincts like this, but he knows that he is here for more. Ecclesiastes 3:11 says "God has set eternity in the hearts of humans." We are not mere animals. We don’t believe in immortality because we prove it; we prove it because we believe in it. Immortality is instinctive in us.  Death is the result of sin. That is what happened in the Garden of Eden in Genesis 3 when Adam and Eve listened to satan and ate what they were not supposed to eat.  Romans 6:23a tells us “For the wages of sin is death,”.  The whole world is subject to death, because all have sinned. “By one man sin entered the world, and death by sin, and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned” (Romans 5:12).

In Genesis 2:17, the Lord warned Adam that the penalty for disobedience would be death—“you will surely die.”  When Adam disobeyed, he experienced immediate spiritual death, which caused him to hide “from the Lord God among the trees of the garden” (Genesis 3:8).

Later, Adam experienced physical death (Genesis 5:5).  On the cross, Jesus also experienced physical death (Matthew 27:50). The difference is that Adam died because he was a sinner, but Jesus, who had never sinned, chose to die as a substitute for sinners (Hebrews 2:9).

Jesus was our sacrifice.  Jesus then showed His power over death and sin by rising from the dead on the third day(Matthew 28; Revelation 1:18).   Because of Christ, death is a defeated foe. “O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?” (1 Corinthians 15:55; Hosea 13:14).

What does Jesus say about death? John 11:25-26."  Jesus said to her, 'I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die.”

Now, for the unsaved, the one who choses not to accept Christ as His Savior; the one who could not humble himself and worship God; death brings to an end the chance to accept God’s gracious offer of salvation. “It is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment” (Hebrews 9:27).

You see, there are only two choices we can make, we are either unsaved or saved.   For the saved, death ushers us into the presence of Christ: “To be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord” (2 Corinthians 5:8; Philippians 1:23).   So real is the promise of the believer’s resurrection that the physical death of a Christian is called “sleep” (1 Corinthians 15:51; 1 Thessalonians 5:10).   We look forward to that time when “there shall be no more death” (Revelation 21:4).

In Philippians 3:17-4:1 Paul reminds us that as Christians, “our citizenship is in heaven.”  That we are just visitors to this earth. We are just visiting or as the old gospel hymn says: “This world is not my home, I’m just a passing through.”

However, if you have no spiritual belief system and think that this world is all there is; then, your philosophy of life is: “eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow we die.” So people who have no spiritual belief system believe that death is the end. That they will just disappear into oblivion. If that is your belief system you trivialize life and your own enjoyment and pleasure becomes your sole aim and purpose of life.

In Philippians, Paul reminds us that we are not just here on a holiday but that our life here must be seen as a time of preparation for the life that is to come-when we will return home.  Paul also brings to our attention and warns us that while we are just visiting and living in a foreign land, we must not be influenced by the standards, values, trends and attitudes of those who are the enemies of the cross on which Jesus Christ died for ALL OUR SIN and FOREVERYONE WHO ACCEPTS CHRIST AS THEIR SAVIOR.  It is simply humbling our selves to HIS WILL and HIS PLAN for each of us.

The length of our lives is in God’s hands. “If we live, we live for the Lord, and if we die, we die for the Lord.  Therefore, whether we live or die, we belong to God” (Romans 1:8).

In a book written by Dr. Erwin Lutzer: Where Do We Go From Here? He tells the story of a young African martyr who wrote these words in his prison cell before he died:
“I am part of the fellowship of the unashamed, the die has been cast, I have stepped over the line, the decision has been made…..I am a disciple of Jesus Christ….I won’t look back, let up, slow down, back away or be still.  My past is redeemed, my present makes sense, my future is secure…I am finished and done with low living, sight walking, smooth knees, colorless dreams, tamed visions, worldly talking, cheap giving and dwarfed goals.  My face is set, my gait is fast, my goal is heaven, my road is narrow, my way is rough, my companions are few, my guide is reliable, my mission is clear. I won’t give up, shut up, let up until I have stayed up, stored up, prayed up for the cause of Jesus Christ.  I must go till He comes, give till I drop, preach, till everyone knows, work till He stops me and when He comes for His own. He will have no trouble recognizing me because my banner will have been clear.”

If you put your faith in Jesus Christ, death is a transition into a wonderful life, not a fearful end.  You will enjoy eternity in a wonderful new body (that is what the Bible tells us) no more pains or sadness.   You will be reunited with Christian loved ones. Sin, sorrow, sickness, and pain will be no more. Best of all, you will enjoy face-to-face fellowship with God.  G.K. Chesterton describes how the early Christian martyrs went to death and how they saw death. He said: “They went forward toward death as if they smelled a field of flowers afar off.” Is that how you see death or do you see death as Dylan Thomas said: “cursing the darkness"?

For those of us who have accepted Jesus Christ and what He did on that Cross for each of us… we know better!  We may not want to leave our loved ones behind, but when the time comes we are not afraid because we know that we are going to something better, to a life of beauty and glory and riches of which this world can only dream.   Be sure your eternal destination is secure today!

Did you know???

Did you know that God has made A BAG FOR OUR SINS?
Job 14:17 says. “My transgression is sealed up in a bag, and You cover my iniquity.”  In ancient times, when men died at sea, their bodies were placed in a weighted bag which was sewn together and sealed.  Then they were cast into the depths of the sea.  If we ask God to forgive us of our sins that is what God will do with our sins.  They are cast into the depths of the sea. When Christ died, by His one sacrifice for our sins,  He put away all our sins. They are buried in the sea of God's infinite forgiveness, never to be
brought up again.  Our sins can be erased, only by Faith in the shed blood of Christ. (Ephesians 2:13-28)

Did you know that God has written A BOOK FOR OUR NAMES?
If you have asked Jesus to forgive you of your sins, the Bible tells us that your name is written in the Lamb's Book of life!   You will find that throughout scripture.  (See: Psalm 139:16, Philippians 4:3 and Revelation 13:8 and 17:8)  The fact that our names are written in that Book means that our salvation is a matter of absolute certainty.  When God says "Rejoice because your names are written in heaven,"   He is telling us that we have nothing to fear.  All is well for those whose names are written in heaven.  This tells us that the only way one’s name can be placed in the Book of Life is by the acceptance of Jesus Christ as one’s Lord and Savior, and what He did for us at the Cross.  This is referred to as a Foundational Doctrine and it means that every Doctrine from the Bible must be built on the foundation of the Cross of Jesus Christ otherwise it is false, fake, counterfeit and a hoax.  Are you getting the message?

Did you know that God also keeps A BOTTLE FOR OUR TEARS?
Psalm 56:8-9 states:
"You tell all my wanderings: Put You my tears into Your bottle: are they not in Your book?...when I cry  unto You, then shall my enemies turn back: This I know; for God is for me.” It was customary at ancient Egyptian funerals for mourners to have a small cloth or sponge to wipe away their tears.   Then, they were squeezed into a small vial, a tear bottle, and placed in the tomb with the dead,
symbolizing the care the mourners had for one who had died.  Even so, our God, our heavenly Father, our Almighty Savior, our Holy Comforter tenderly cares for us.  In all our afflictions He is afflicted.  We are the very apple of his eye.  In these verses we are being told that despite David’s wanderings and his attempts to escape from King Saul, God knew at all times exactly where he was.  When the Believer sets out to do the will of God for his life, Satan will do all he can to oppose those efforts.  Remember the Lord allows Satan a certain latitude so that we may learn to have Faith and to place our trust exclusively in the Word of God.  We have to be reminded that Satan is a liar, a loser but he is limited by God.

There is a saying:
Oppressors stand above us, adversaries stand against us but comforters stand beside us.
No matter how old we are, we all want to be comforted.   In the Bible,  God is our ultimate comforter, through Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit.  God takes great care to comfort His people in their trials and sorrows in this world.  Could anything be more comforting in this world of sin, sorrow and death?  Our God has put our sins in a bag and buried them.  Our names are written in the Book of Life so we can rejoice in that.  And our tears He has put into a bottle to show His tender care for us.  For those of us who have been Believers for many years and have read the Word of God; we know that God is absolutely true to His Word.  If He says it is going to happen….it will happen.

Do you know for sure that your name is written in the Lamb’s Book of Life?
Maybe you are asking, "Who is the Lamb"?
Jesus is the Lamb!
So I ask, is your name in His Book or not?
Remember you won’t get to spend eternity in Heaven unless it is recorded there.
Sometimes, we forget that we are ALL terminal and one day, when death comes knocking at your door you need to know where you will spend eternity.  Will you spend eternity in heaven or hell?
What is your eternal destiny?
Remember life comes from Jesus not from what the world has to offer.  This world offers no eternal rewards only heartaches, pain and sorrows.
Only Jesus offers eternal rewards.

It is your move.
It is always your choice.
Choose wisely!

One Week Left to Live

Do you truly believe that every day, every minute, every breath you take is truly a gift from God?  There is a verse in Proverbs 27:1 that says: Boast not yourself of tomorrow for you know not what a day may bring forth.  This verse means we are not to brag about tomorrow because tomorrows are the frailest things in all of creation.

In the Bible there is a passage in Luke 12:16-20 about a rich fool who boasted of his "tomorrows".  He had so much that he was going to pull down his old barns and build bigger, newer barns.  BUT what did God say to him?  You fool…this night your soul will be required of you.  This is not only for rich people but also for the poor as well.  We forget that ALL our blessings come from God.  The rich man had provided for the flesh, but he had not provided for his soul.

Is this passage speaking to you?  You see, sooner or later this night will come to each of us.  In modern day English that means we will be out of here one day.  Today may be your last day.  What have you sent ahead for your soul?  So, how would you live if you knew you only had one week to live?  From time to time it is necessary for us to deal with our own mortality.  The statistics tell us that 100% of all humans will die.

I remember reading about W.C.Fields, the old time vaudeville comic and early movie actor.  A story was once told about him.  Fields was dying and he had a friend who was a Christian and every day this friend would go to see him.  He would tell him about Jesus and the need to give his heart to the Lord so that when he died he would go to heaven.  But Fields would not listen.  However, one day his friend came in the house and found Fields reading the Bible.  His neighbor was excited he said to him “What are you doing?”  Fields replied “I am looking for a loophole.”   Many people today are looking for loopholes.

If this week were to be your last week, I would guess that many people would repent. But you see the theology in many religious circles today says that repentance is old-fashioned and out of date.  It is a religious relic from the dark ages of hellfire and brimstone preaching.  But it was not obsolete in the mind of Jesus because in Luke 13:3 Jesus said: Except you repent, you shall likewise perish.  Isn’t it better to keep our souls on a current day-by-day basis because we never know when God will audit our books.

Some of you may be saying that this is for old people but I am a young person, I have my whole life ahead of me.  Just listen, watch and read the news on a daily basis and you soon see that all age groups die.  We should be reading our Bibles but study after study in the last 25 years has revealed that American Christians increasingly do not read their Bibles.  They don’t engage their Bibles.  They don’t know their Bibles.  We are now living in a post- biblical culture.  Why?  Because whether it is the internet, video games, the TV, the Smart Phones, Social media, increased time spent on entertainment and sports, everything else takes up our time.   Americans are spending less time between the pages of reading ANY kind of book, not just the Good Book. And it is not because we do not have Bibles; the average American has at least 3 Bibles in their homes.  You can download a Bible for free or you can even steal a Gideon Bible from your hotel room, if you are so inclined.

If you only had one week to live I would guess that a person would pray.  In the Bible when the prophet came to tell King Hezekiah that he was going to die, he prayed and God answered by extending his life for 15 more years.  That is not always the case.  Most people see praying as a last resort rather than a first reaction.

Others I guess would give up everything they owned to God. Now I will give to spreading the gospel.  Our money can’t bribe the undertaker neither can it influence God to finance another heartbeat. We cannot write out a check for our breath.

Perhaps you would spend that last week in church.  Some folks never come to church until the hearse and pallbearers bring them in the doors.    I am quite sure that if people knew they had a week to live they would say I would make things right with everyone.  Eternity has a strange way of changing our attitudes toward people.  For others they would begin to think of heaven.  Many times we Christians have the attitude that heaven means no urgency.  Any day now I will get ready to die.

Each of us has no guarantee of tomorrow.  I read a quote many years ago that said:
Yesterday is a canceled check
Tomorrow is a promissory note
Today is the only cash that you have...Spend it wisely

Especially in these uncertain days, we must each ask ourselves "how will I spend my last week"?
